Improve possibilities to group larger quantities of items under the same node without affecting the URL segment

I want to be able to group content in "buckets" without affecting the URL. Container pages have been used, but this is not ideal since they add a URL segment and we want to try and avoid to remove this by tweaking into some central parts of routing etc.

We use the content grid, which somewhat solves the problem. However, once you start geting more than a few dozen of items in a listing, the grid in it's current shape is not ideal for browsing through larger quantities of items.

My suggestion is to be able to set metadata of a property used for filtering (could be Episerver Categories, but also other properties used) as well as a list of valid choices in the UI Descriptor for the Content Grid. The grid could then present this as a filter option, for instance as a drop down, to be able to easier filter and find items.
