Ranking works when searching, but not when starting by navigating

When searching for products from the search bar, the internal ranking results work as expected. In our case we prioritize stock and frequently bought items.

The problem is if a customer starts by navigating through the hierarchy, the ranking is not used. This often results in many long-tail items being displayed ahead of frequently purchased items.

"Ball Valves" is a category on our site. If a customer searches for "ball valves" he has a very different experience than if he navigates to the "Ball Valve" category. He should see the same results.

You would need to explicitly influence that ranking if you're not doing free text search which otherwise influence the scoring. You could sort by stock and fbi or you could boostmatch on stock levels and fbi levels
